I use Arch Linux as my main operating system (I also use ubuntu on an old desktop), but I do use windows XP for school.

In linux you use config files as opposed to configuration interfaces. This makes it a bit faster to set a large number of settings, but also means that you have to learn the configuration language of every program you want to use which isn't as hard as it sounds.

My config files (from Oct 2009):

Xdefaults
Muttrc
Wmiirc
Xinitrc

Xmonad/
Batt.sh
Cpu.sh
Fs.sh
Xmonad.hs

X11 Config
Zshrc

And a screenshot of my setup.
